In the fall of 2020, conductor Tito Muñoz, violinist Giora Schmidt, and group of professional musician colleagues gathered impromptu in Central Park to perform for parkgoers. Most professional musicians have not been able to perform in large ensembles since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the closure of the performing arts industry. Because of this, the musicians in this ensemble decided to find a way to come together safely to make music. This particular ensemble had never performed or rehearsed together prior. You would normally see these musicians performing on the stages and pits of Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and Broadway... all of which are closed indefinitely.
NYC's professional musicians are represented by Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians. They have created a campaign to help provide emergency relief to musicians, address their health fund’s shortfall, and enhance efforts to get musicians safely back to work, restoring the musical heart and soul of New York.
